Atlas of the Heart: What We’re Reading

Atlas of the Heart: Mapping Meaningful Connection and the Language of Human Experience by Brené Brown

About the Book:

In Atlas of the Heart, Brown takes us on a journey through eighty-seven of the emotions and experiences that define what it means to be human. As she maps the necessary skills and an actionable framework for meaningful connection, she gives us the language and tools to access a universe of new choices and second chances—a universe where we can share and steward the stories of our bravest and most heartbreaking moments with one another in a way that builds connection. Brown shares, “I want this book to be an atlas for all of us, because I believe that, with an adventurous heart and the right maps, we can travel anywhere and never fear losing ourselves.”

Jen’s Take:

Always an insightful author, Brené’s expertise as a researcher and storyteller makes for an engaging read that can be consumed in short bursts.I rarely have the time to sit down and read for extended periods of time, but this book is organized in a way that I can pick it up, read a short section, and then reflect on the new information throughout my day.

Atlas of the Heart has helped me gain a deeper understanding of the spectrum of human emotions, which prepares me to better serve our clients and the team at MACKEY. As financial coaches, we’re in the business of (to use Brené’s term) vulnerability. Empathy and a deep understanding of the human psyche is an important element to guiding clients.

Understanding the language of the human experience is a worthy pursuit, regardless of your industry.
