Closing the Books on an Incredible Career: Tom Ferkinhoff Retires After 41 Years
Let's talk numbers – Tom's favorite subject.
Over 41 years in accounting and 14 years with MACKEY: An estimated 5,781 tax returns. 2,255 strategic tax plans. Far too many 12-hour days to list. And one perfectly executed retirement plan.
For anyone who knows Tom, that last number is the one that matters right now, and true to form, he's depreciated his tax career and is ready to realize some gains.
More Than Just Numbers
Since joining MACKEY in 2011, Tom has been the calm, steady presence our clients and team could always count on. "My job is to have a client's back so they can look forward," Tom said about his role, and he's lived that philosophy every single day.
Tom wore many hats at MACKEY: tax strategist, CFO Coach, mentor, and advisor, all while managing his own tax firm. He seamlessly integrated into our team, bringing deep expertise in both tax preparation and strategic financial coaching. His entrepreneurial spirit gave him a unique perspective that resonated deeply with our clients.
Whether it was navigating intricate tax codes, coaching clients through complex financial decisions, mentoring team members, or providing strategic counsel during critical business moments, Tom approached every situation with patience, wisdom, and an unwavering commitment to doing what's right. And yes, usually with a perfectly timed quip that brought some much needed levity.
What's Next
Tom's retirement is well-deserved and long-awaited (We literally kept telling him he wasn’t allowed to retire). When he's not tending to his farm – growing fruits and vegetables and raising cattle, pigs, and chickens – he’ll be enjoying his number one passion, his family. He plans on spending more time traveling with his wife, Angie, visiting their children and grandchildren, camping, and tackling his next handyman project.
A Proper Send-Off
To celebrate Tom and his years of dedicated service, our team honored him by enjoying one of his favorite pastimes: baseball. We watched the Cincinnati Reds take on the Atlanta Braves in what turned out to be an absolute thriller. Both teams scored 8 runs in the 8th inning, sending the game into extra innings. Unfortunately, the Reds fell short 12-11—but the game was a perfect sendoff: exciting, full of heart, and memorable until the very end.
A Lasting Legacy
Tom will always be a member of the MACKEY family. His dedication, expertise, and genuine care for our clients have set a standard of excellence that will continue to guide our firm for years to come.
Thank you, Tom, for 41 years of exceptional service to the profession and 14 incredible years with MACKEY. We're excited to see you embrace this next chapter. And, we promise not to call you during tax season (well, mostly).
